The 9.0 Quake That Rocked Japan: Survivor Trauma Reactions
Japan's 9.0 earthquake took place on March 11, 2011, followed by an unstoppable tsunami. Current estimates are that at least 20,000 people are either missing or deceased. The survivors of this disaster have faced many challenges including emotional and coping difficulties, financial strain, physical injuries, lack of resources, and many more. According to leading psychologists, while many people will be able to adjust to life after the quake, some will suffer serious psychological problems.
Survivors who face the highest psychological risk include those with:
- A pre-existing mental or mood disorder such as Major Depression
- Past trauma that is still unresolved or has yet to be treated
- Psychological disorders that remain untreated
- No current support network or at best a very limited support network
- Hindered or a lack of coping skills
Survivor experiences that are common after major disasters like Japan include:
--Disassociative symptoms
--Mood swings
--Problems with falling or staying asleep
--Finding it hard to eat
--Being "jumpy"
--Extra sensitivity to the triggers of trauma, like an aftershock
--Shock
The Kobe earthquake in 1995 marked the first earthquake in Japan's history to spur an organized psychiatric trauma response effort. Since then, following the 2011 earthquake in Japan, psychiatric teams were deployed into the effected areas helping those in need. However, the main priority of the relief effort by the mental health professionals have been to address the physical needs before taking on the mental health needs. Those who have survived disaster or crisis realize that it is difficult to process emotions while in need of food, shelter, or other necessary survival resources. The psychological toll on the survivors will most likely continue for years, even with all of the great relief efforts in place.
Two great advantages in Japan's favor for their rebuilding are their sense of community and their strong family values. These advantages as well as their support for each other and teamwork will aid in both their physical and psychological healing. For other societies who may be lacking, Japan's efforts in implementing effective support networks can serve as a model to duplicate. For one's actual survival may hinge on it.
